Dr. Barry Schaitkin’s Background and Platform

Barry’s Community.

Barry grew up in a small central Pennsylvania town. Helping his father run the family business—an army-navy store that evolved into a haberdashery—taught him that where you spend your dollar is a form of voting. To that end, he is committed to making sure that the Fox Chapel Borough Council supports and relies on local businesses whenever possible.

Together with his wife, Dr. Sally Carty, Barry raised three children in Fox Chapel. He is well-versed in the issues facing our community and spends his time working to address them. He frequently serves as a poll worker to ensure the safety of our local elections, and he volunteers his time with the Fox Chapel Parks commission. He also runs in local Pittsburgh races to benefit various charities, including the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

Barry’s Work.

Dr. Barry Schaitkin (pictured here with his son) received his M.D. from Penn State University. He practiced medicine with UPMC for over thirty-five years and ran the Otolaryngology Residency Program for almost twenty years. He is a beloved mentor and recipient of multiple awards for excellence in teaching and distinguished service in the medical community. His professional experiences have taught him the values of listening and teamwork—patients and trainees alike both depend on having someone listen to their needs and help them find a way forward. If elected to Fox Chapel Borough Council, he will bring with him that spirit of collaboration and commitment to hard work.

Barry’s Platform.

Inclusive Community. We can do a better job of making everyone who chooses to make their home in Fox Chapel feel more welcome. People of all political beliefs, genders, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and religious traditions should feel safe in our community. Barry plans to work with leaders in our schools and businesses to make Fox Chapel a stronger, more vibrant community.

Green Space. One of the many wonderful things about Fox Chapel is its verdant and beautiful green space. As an avid runner, Barry is committed to protecting and expanding that space. He plans to do so by adjusting our water policies and by making our streets safer for bikers and pedestrians.

Listening. Barry is well aware that his experience is not the only one that matters. He believes in government that makes space for and listens to its constituents. He looks forward to hearing from you, the reader. What matters to you, and how can Barry help?
